Incheon Airport to Seoul: AREX Train vs Airport Bus to Hongdae and Seoul Station, Plus the Climate Card

If it is your first time landing at Incheon International Airport, here is the short answer: take the AREX all-stop train if you are staying in Hongdae, take the AREX express train if you are staying near Seoul Station and want the fastest ride, and take the airport limousine bus if you have heavy luggage or your hotel is right on a bus stop. Once you are in the city, a Climate Card short-term pass gives you unlimited subway and city bus rides for a flat price. Below is how each option works, with fares as of September 2026.

Option 1: AREX train

AREX (Airport Railroad Express) runs from both terminals into the city. There are two kinds of trains, and they leave from the same underground station in each terminal’s transportation center.

Express train: airport → Seoul Station, non-stop

The express train goes straight to Seoul Station with no stops. According to the Creatrip guide, it takes about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and 51 minutes from Terminal 2, and the adult fare is ₩13,000 (about $10) at the station, with online booking sites selling it for around ₩11,600. Seats are reserved. Sample times listed for Terminal 2 are a first departure at 05:16 and a last departure at 22:40.

You cannot tap a T-money card for the express train. Buy a ticket at the AREX counter or vending machine in the terminal, or book online and exchange it at the counter.

The express train is the right pick if your hotel is near Seoul Station or you plan to change to the KTX high-speed train there.

All-stop train: airport → Hongdae or Seoul Station, cheaper

The all-stop train is a regular commuter line. It stops at every station, including Hongik University Station (Hongdae) and ends at Seoul Station. Fares are distance-based and, per the same guide, top out at ₩5,350 for adults. Expect roughly an hour to Hongdae and 59–66 minutes to Seoul Station.

You pay with a T-money card or an accepted credit card at the gate, just like the subway. There are no reserved seats, and the trains are busy at rush hour, so keep bags close.

For Hongdae this is the obvious choice: the express train does not stop there, and the bus is three times the price.

Option 2: Airport limousine bus

The airport buses are comfortable coaches with luggage bays under the floor, which makes them the easiest option if you have two big suitcases or are travelling with children.

• Bus 6002 goes to Hongik University Station (stopping near the Mercure and L7 hotels, and the RYSE hotel in Seogyo-dong) and continues toward Jongno, Dongdaemun and Cheongnyangni.
• Bus 6001 goes to Seoul Station and Myeongdong, continuing to Dongdaemun.

The official Airport Limousine site lists the fare as ₩17,000 for adults and ₩12,000 for children on both routes. At the airport you buy a ticket at the limousine bus counters, then board at the numbered stop outside Terminal 1 (first floor) or in the Terminal 2 transportation center on the basement level. Boarding is first come, first served. Inside the city you can pay with a transit card or cash when boarding.

Buses take longer than the train in traffic, usually 60–90 minutes, so the train wins if you are in a hurry. The bus wins if you would rather not carry bags up and down subway stairs.

Step 3: Get a Climate Card at Hongdae or Seoul Station

The Climate Card (기후동행카드) is Seoul’s flat-rate transit pass. The short-term version made for visitors, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, costs:

• 1 day: ₩5,000
• 2 days: ₩8,000
• 3 days: ₩10,000
• 5 days: ₩15,000
• 7 days: ₩20,000

The plastic card itself is a one-time ₩3,000, so a 3-day pass costs ₩13,000 in total. A single subway ride in Seoul is around ₩1,550, so the pass pays off once you take four or more rides a day.

Where to buy it

Both Hongik University Station and Seoul Station are on Seoul Metro Line 2 and Line 1/4 respectively, which puts them inside the network of station vending machines on Lines 1–8 that sell and load the card. The official site also lists convenience stores near stations (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven) and tourist information centers such as Myeongdong as places to buy the physical card. Per the Seoul Government page, the machines have accepted international credit and debit cards since March 2025, so you do not need Korean cash.

How it works

1. Buy the ₩3,000 card at a machine or convenience store.
2. Load a short-term pass at a station machine. The pass starts on the day you load it and is counted in calendar days, not 24-hour blocks. You cannot set a future start date for short-term passes.
3. Tap in and out at subway gates and on Seoul city buses as usual.

What it covers and what it does not

Covered: Seoul subway lines, Seoul-licensed city and village buses, and the AREX all-stop line between Gimpo Airport and Seoul Station.

Not covered: boarding AREX at Incheon Airport (you can get off at the airport terminals with the card, but not get on), the Sinbundang Line, subway sections outside Seoul, and airport limousine buses. Several guides also note that the short-term passes do not include the Ttareungi shared bikes or the Hangang river bus.

So the order of operations on arrival day is: pay for the airport train or bus separately, then buy and load the Climate Card once you reach Hongdae or Seoul Station.

Practical notes

• Luggage on the all-stop train: there are no racks. Stand near the doors with your suitcase or travel outside rush hour (07:30–09:00 and 18:00–19:30).
• Terminal check: Terminal 2 serves Korean Air, Delta and several SkyTeam airlines; most other airlines use Terminal 1. Both terminals have AREX and bus stops.
• Cash: the bus ticket counters and station machines take cards, but a little cash helps for buses inside the city.
• Refunds: unused Climate Card value can be refunded before the pass expires, minus a ₩500 fee, according to the official page.
• Timetables change: check the AREX and Airport Limousine sites linked below on the day you travel.

Wrapping up
