Where to Eat in Seongbuk-dong: A Noodle Neighbourhood, and the Cheap Food Is at the Bottom of the Hill (2026)

Seongbuk-dong is a noodle neighbourhood. And the cheap food is not up the hill but down at the bottom of it.

Know those two things and you are set.

The official local dish is noodles

The Seongbuk-gu archive describes kalguksu, or guksi as it is called here, as the speciality of Seongbuk-dong. The Seoul Future Heritage certificate even uses the phrase “kalguksu politics”, from the days when politicians met in the neighbourhood’s noodle houses.

There is no official basis for naengmyeon. Some people associate Seongbuk-dong with cold noodles, but no official document connecting the two could be found.

Seongbuk-gu publishes the shop names itself

This is the most useful find of the research. On a page headed certified shops of Seongbuk-dong, the district office lists the names, addresses and founding years of 21 shops. Fourteen of them serve food.

The criterion is not the cooking. It is 30 years or more in business, traditional food, and contribution to the area.

Of the 14 food and confectionery shops, these are the 11 with a founding year on record, oldest first.

Four of the 14 are noodle houses: Seongbuk-dongjip (hand-cut kalguksu), Guksijip (Andong guksi), Songane Gom Guksu and Myeongmun Makguksu (Bongpyeong buckwheat). Seongbuk-dong as a noodle neighbourhood is borne out by the make-up of the district’s own list.

There are two Korean set-menu restaurants as well. This is how the district introduces Gukhwa Jeongwon.

Napoleon Confectionery holds three certifications: a certified shop of Seongbuk-dong, Seoul Future Heritage, and Oraegage as well.

There is only one good price shop inside Seongbuk-dong

The Ikseon-dong post reported zero certified shops inside the legal-status neighbourhood. In Seongbuk-dong there is exactly one.

Up the hill in Seongbuk-dong there is almost nothing inside the official schemes; the certifications are all down the hill and over towards Sungshin Women’s University.

Prices at the bottom of the hill

These are the prices published under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s good price scheme, as listed on 23 September 2026, all within walking distance of Hansung University Station.

Janchi guksu at 3,000 won and an americano at 1,500 won, within walking distance of Hansung University Station.

It is cheaper over the wall

Seongbuk-dong adjoins Jongno-gu across the Hanyang City Wall. Cross at Hyehwamun Gate and it gets cheaper.

One wall makes the difference in price.

The usual caveat. Only shops cheaper than the average of the surrounding commercial area are designated under the good price scheme. So this is a floor, not an average.

The Korean set-menu restaurants up the hill in Seongbuk-dong do not charge these prices.

Can you eat at Gilsangsa Temple

There is no temple food programme. The refectory is for monks and practising Buddhists.

A temple stay is registered. Seon meditation and the theory-and-meditation programme are 30,000 won each, but there is no English-only programme.

There is a teahouse in the grounds, Gilsang Dawon, which visitors may use. Its hours and prices are not published, though.

Suyeon Sanbang

The house of the novelist Yi Tae-jun, and by Seongbuk-gu’s classification a traditional teahouse. It is on the district’s certified shop list too, with tea, beombeok, hangwa and injeolmi as its signature items.

That said, no official page confirming that it is trading in 2026 could be found. Check before you go.

Which exit

Both buses leave from the stop named Hansung University Station Exit 6, Samseongyo, and a village bus is 1,200 won.

Food at the bottom, sights at the top. Eat before you go up, or eat on the way down.

Things worth knowing

Every restaurant and cafe is entirely non-smoking, and has been since 2015.

There is no tipping, and the price on the menu is the final amount.

Refusing a card payment is illegal, but older shops may not take cards issued abroad.

Seongbuk-dong has no official request for quiet. Ikseon-dong has its four promises; Seongbuk-dong has nothing of the sort. Nearby Jangsu Village does. The absence of a rule does not mean it is fine to peer in.

What could not be verified

In some cases two official sources gave different prices. Where the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s published rate conflicted with another body’s figure, only the ministry’s rate has been carried over here.

Seongbuk-gu does not publish lists of model restaurants, safe restaurants or local speciality restaurants. That is unlike other districts, and it is why this post rests on the certified shop list and the good price scheme alone.

The hours and prices at Gilsang Dawon and whether Suyeon Sanbang is currently trading could not be confirmed.

• The official local dish of Seongbuk-dong is noodles. There is no official basis for naengmyeon.
