Busan Festivals in September and October 2026: Film, Rock and the Biennale

If you are deciding when to visit Busan, the calendar has already decided for you: late September through mid-October. The summer beach crowds have gone, the weather is still warm, and nearly every major event the city runs falls inside a two-week window. Dates and prices below reflect September 2026.

6–15 October — Busan International Film Festival

This is the 31st edition. Over ten days it screens 316 films in total, including 246 from 59 countries, with 95 world premieres among them. BIFF is generally counted as Asia’s largest film festival, and the whole city shifts gear while it runs.

The hub is the Busan Cinema Center in Centum City, at 120 Suyeonggangbyeon-daero, with additional screenings and events in Haeundae and Nampo-dong.

If you want tickets, the sequence matters. The screening schedule is published at 17:00 on 11 September, and booking happens online at biff.kr and nowhere else. Popular titles go quickly, so set up an account before the schedule drops.

2–4 October — Busan International Rock Festival

The weekend just before the film festival. It takes place at Samnak Ecological Park on the bank of the Nakdong River, with 99 acts from Korea and abroad across three days.

The Libertines close the festival as the final headliner, alongside Megadeth and Avenged Sevenfold. The Korean side of the bill includes Jannabi, Songgolmae, Jang Beom-june, Broccoli You Too, Idiotape and Say Sue Me, plus Japanese acts such as Ai no Ende. A three-day pass is ₩212,800 (about $160), with a limited early-bird discount.

As the photo shows, the park is a broad, open flood plain — there is almost no shade. Bring a mat and a hat, and a jacket for the evening, because the wind off the river turns cold after dark.

Through 1 November — Busan Biennale

The Biennale opened on 29 August and runs 65 days, to 1 November. That makes it the flexible one: whatever week you are in town during September or October, it is open.

This edition is titled Dissident Chorus, exploring non-verbal communication and collective solidarity through sound and the body. It is spread across three venues: the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, a former high school building on Yeongdo island, and Space Wonji.

The museum is on Eulsukdo island at 1191 Nakdongnam-ro. It is closed on Mondays. General admission is free, but individual exhibitions may charge.

28 September – 18 October — the Busan pork soup contest

Dwaeji gukbap — pork and rice in a milky broth — is Busan’s signature dish, the thing locals name first when asked what to eat here. In 2026 the city is running a citywide contest around it for the first time, from 16 August to 18 October. Two stretches matter to a visitor:

• 28 September – 14 October, “Gukbap Week” — you visit the shortlisted restaurants, or vote through KakaoMap, to pick the top ten and then the top three.
• 16–18 October, the closing showcase — held at the Busan International Finance Center (BIFC) in Nam-gu.

The practical upside: choosing a dwaeji gukbap restaurant in Busan is normally paralysing. During this window, the shortlist is your restaurant map.

Every Saturday — the Gwangalli drone light show

This one runs year-round, festival or not. Every Saturday at Gwangalli Beach, 1,100 drones fly a choreographed show. It is free — no ticket, no assigned seating, and it is visible from anywhere along the beach.

Only the timing changes with the season: 20:00 and 22:00 from March to September, 19:00 and 21:00 from October to February. Visit in September and you catch the 22:00 show; visit in October and it is the 19:00 one.

Smaller things on at the same time

• Dalmaji Culture Festa — 12 September to 21 November, around Dalmaji-gil in Haeundae.
• Gwangbok-ro Balcony Music Show — 12 to 26 September, on Gwangbok-ro in Nampo-dong.
• Starry Night in Busan Night Market — 26 September to 18 October. The venue moves between seasons, so check the Visit Busan calendar before going.

The fireworks are on 7 November

Worth stating plainly, because visitors get this wrong constantly: the Busan Fireworks Festival is not in October. In 2026 it falls on Saturday 7 November, with the main show launching at 20:00. It is fired from three points — Gwangalli plus Dongbaekseom and Igidae — so several vantage points work. The beach standing zones are free but overwhelmingly crowded; paid seating is sold separately.

So do not plan an October trip expecting fireworks. If the fireworks are the point, aim for the first week of November instead.

Practical notes

• Book accommodation early. With the rock festival and the film festival back to back, rates in Haeundae and Seomyeon climb sharply through the first two weeks of October.
• The Busan subway covers most of it. The Cinema Center is at Centum City Station on Line 2; Gwangalli is a walk from Gwangan or Geumnyeonsan, also Line 2; Samnak Ecological Park is reachable on Line 2 as well.
• The Museum of Contemporary Art Busan needs a bus transfer from Hadan Station on Line 1.
• October days are mild but the sea wind makes evenings cold, and most of these events are outdoors. Bring a layer.
• Organisers do move dates and times. Check the official site once more before you travel.

Wrapping up

Planning is unusually easy here. Rock festival in the first week of October, film festival in the second, the Biennale on any spare afternoon, drone show on Saturday night — and a bowl of pork soup somewhere in between. That is most of a Busan trip already filled in.
