Gapyeong Day Trip Guide: Trains, the Circular Bus and What to Combine (2026)

Gapyeong is the answer to “what can we do outside Seoul without staying the night.” It is an hour away by train, it holds Nami Island, a famous arboretum, a French-themed village and a rail bike course, and you can string several of them together in a day.

The catch is that these sights are scattered across a rural county with thin bus service, so the planning matters more than usual. Prices and times are as of September 2026.

What is actually in Gapyeong

The county sits northeast of Seoul along the Bukhangang river, wrapped in mountains, with the Gyeongchun railway running through it. Two stations matter.

• Gapyeong Station serves Nami Island, the rail bike, Jaraseom and Petite France.
• Cheongpyeong Station, one stop closer to Seoul, serves the Garden of Morning Calm and Cheongpyeong Lake.

That split is the single most useful thing to know. Guides that tell you to reach the arboretum from Gapyeong Station are sending you the long way round.

Getting there from Seoul

ITX-Cheongchun is the fast option. It runs from Yongsan through Oksu, Wangsimni, Cheongnyangni and Sangbong.

Seats are reserved, so a transport card will not get you on board. Buy through the Korail app, the website or a station machine. There are around 18 services a day each way, and more at weekends.

The Gyeongchun Line subway is the slow, flexible option. From Sangbong it takes about 50 minutes on Gyeongchun Line, your T-money card works, and it costs roughly a third of the ITX fare. Trains run every 20 to 30 minutes, with longer gaps off-peak.

Pick the ITX if you want a guaranteed seat and an early start. Pick the subway if your plans are loose.

A direct shuttle also runs from Seoul to Nami Island, operated by KTourStory. It leaves Hongik University Station exit 4 at 09:00, calls at Myeongdong and Dongdaemun Design Plaza, and reaches Nami at 11:30. The return leaves Nami at 16:30. It is simple but rigid, and it only serves Nami.

Getting around once you arrive

This is where most plans fall apart. Local buses are infrequent and the attractions are 10 to 30 minutes apart by road.

The tourist circular bus is the practical answer, and it changed in April 2026. Almost every blog you will find online describes the old single loop. The current service has two courses:

• Course A runs Gapyeong Terminal, the rail bike, Jaraseom, Gapyeong Station, Nami Island, Petite France and the Gapyeong Cruise area.
• Course B runs the Garden of Morning Calm, Biryeongi, Suljium, Cheongpyeong Station, Cheongpyeong Terminal and Petite France.

Petite France is the transfer point between the two, and one ticket covers both.

A one-day pass is ₩8,000 for adults and ₩6,000 for youth, children, seniors, disabled visitors and military. Under-threes ride free. You pay the driver as you board; if a bus is full, you wait for the next one.

The loop takes about an hour and buses come every 60 to 90 minutes. From Gapyeong Station, Course A departs on the hour.

The important part: it does not run on Wednesdays, unless that Wednesday is a public holiday. This rule is new in 2026 and no older guide mentions it. If your only free day is a Wednesday, plan around taxis or pick a single destination.

Realistic itineraries

Nami Island only, relaxed. Train to Gapyeong Station, bus 10-4 or a five-minute taxi to the wharf, ferry across, three or four hours on the island, back by mid-afternoon. This is the trip most people should take.

Nami plus Petite France. Nami in the morning, Course A of the circular bus to Petite France after lunch, back to Gapyeong Station by early evening. A full but comfortable day.

The arboretum version. Get off at Cheongpyeong Station instead, take Course B to the Garden of Morning Calm, spend two hours there, then ride back through Petite France. Better in autumn, and much better in the winter lighting season.

The active version. Rail bike from Gapyeong Station in the morning, Jaraseom in the afternoon, and skip the themed villages entirely.

Trying to fit Nami, the arboretum and Petite France into one day is possible and not enjoyable. Pick two.

When to go

Autumn is the peak, from mid-October into November, and it is when Nami’s tree avenues look the way they do in photographs. The Jarasum International Jazz Festival runs 9 to 11 October 2026 and draws well over a hundred thousand people, so book trains early around those dates.

Spring brings cherry blossom to Nami in mid-April, later than Seoul.

Winter is a real option here rather than a consolation. The Garden of Morning Calm runs its lighting festival from early December to mid-March, staying open until 21:00 and until 23:00 on Saturdays, at no extra charge.

Summer is humid but the river activities at Cheongpyeong Lake only operate then.

Practical notes

• Wednesday closes the circular bus. Check your day of the week before anything else.
• Two stations, not one. Gapyeong for Nami and the rail bike, Cheongpyeong for the arboretum.
• Book the ITX in advance on autumn weekends. Trains sell out.
• Bring cash for the bus. The circular bus is paid on board.
• The earliest useful train is around 08:50 from Yongsan, arriving 09:49, which lines up with the 10:00 bus and ferry.
• The last ITX back from Gapyeong leaves at about 22:33, and the last ferry off Nami is 21:05. An 18:00 to 20:00 train is a comfortable target.

Wrapping up

Take the ITX, do two things rather than four, and check that you are not travelling on a Wednesday. If you only do one, make it Nami Island.
