Where to Stay in Sokcho: The Beach, the Port or the Mountain (2026)

Sokcho is a small city with a national park at one end and the sea at the other, and there is one structural fact that should drive your choice of hotel before anything else.

There are two bus terminals and they are at opposite ends of town. Since there is no railway, whichever one your ticket uses is effectively your arrival point.

The city publishes an official accommodation directory of 27 properties, with no prices and no ratings. This guide follows it and does not invent price bands.

The terminal question, first

The express bus terminal (고속버스터미널) at 3994 Donghae-daero sits at the south end, five minutes’ walk from Sokcho Beach. It serves the express routes from Gangnam, Dong Seoul, Incheon, Gwangmyeong and Cheolsan.

The intercity terminal (시외버스터미널) at 16 Jangan-ro is north and more central. It serves the nationwide network, including Gangneung, Donghae, Pohang, Daegu and Busan.

If you are coming from Seoul on an express bus, the beach is a short walk from where you land. If you are coming up the coast from Gangneung, you arrive in the centre instead.

Sokcho Beach and downtown

The default choice, and the right one for most trips.

Sokcho Beach is 940 m long and 20 to 80 m wide, city-run, free, and five minutes on foot from the express bus terminal. The town centre, the fishery market and the Gaetbae ferry are all within a short bus ride or a long walk.

The city’s directory lists Lotte Resort Sokcho, Ramada Gangwon Sokcho, Hanwha Hotel & Resort and Maremons among the properties in and around the beach and downtown area.

Suits: first visits, anyone without a car, travellers arriving by express bus, summer trips.

Downsides: it is the busiest area in July and August, and the bus to Seoraksan takes you back through town.

At the Seoraksan gate

Sokcho’s other cluster is out at Seorakdong, around the park entrance at 1085 to 1137 Seoraksan-ro. The directory lists The-K Seoraksan Family Hotel, Kumho Seorak Resort and Seorak Pine Resort, plus the Seorakdong campsite and a public leisure campsite.

The case for staying here is simple: the mountain has a time-limited entry system, and the gates in summer admit hikers only until 14:00 on the Biseondae routes and earlier elsewhere. Sleeping at the trailhead removes the morning bus from the equation.

Suits: hikers, anyone doing Ulsanbawi, foliage season visitors who want to be first at the cable car.

Downsides: you are outside town, so dinner options are limited and the market and Abai Village are a bus ride away. Out of season it is very quiet.

Daepohang

The fishing port at the south end of the city. The directory lists Benikea Hotel San Gwa Bada Daepohang here.

Daepohang has its own market running 10:00 to 23:00 every day, which is the latest food in the city.

Suits: travellers who want a working port rather than a resort strip, and late eaters.

Downsides: further from the park and the town centre, and paid parking.

Yeongnangho

The lagoon in the north of the city, with a 7.8 km path around it and a wetland park. The directory lists the Shinsegae Yeongnangho Resort here.

Suits: quiet trips, walkers, anyone who would rather look at still water than surf.

Downsides: the least connected of the four areas, and nothing much happens at night.

Foliage season is the hard part

Seoraksan’s foliage peaks from mid-October to early November, according to the park service’s own guidance, and that is when Sokcho fills.

Book as far ahead as you can for those three weeks. The same applies to New Year, when the city runs a sunrise event, and to weekends in July and August.

Outside those windows, Sokcho has more rooms than it needs and prices reflect it.

What to check before you book

• Which terminal. They are at opposite ends of town and there is no train to fall back on.
• Distance to a bus 7 or 7-1 stop if Seoraksan is the plan.
• Whether it is a resort or a pension. Much of the coastal stock is self-catering.
• Season. A beach hotel in February is a quiet building.
• Cash for buses. The city’s transport page does not confirm T-money acceptance, so do not rely on it.

Who should stay where

First visit, two days, no car — Sokcho Beach or downtown.

Here to hike Seoraksan — Seorakdong, at the park gate.

Want a working port and late dinners — Daepohang.

Want quiet — Yeongnangho.

Wrapping up

For a standard two-day trip, stay near Sokcho Beach and take the bus out to the mountain. If Seoraksan is the whole point of the visit and you are going in late October, stay at the park gate instead and book it months ahead.
